Decimation and Rescue

Zanis and Johanna Lipke, rescuers of more than 50 Jews.

Perhaps 5,000 Jews are alive in the country as 1941 ends. Most are murdered during the next three-and-a-half years.
Dockworker Zanis Lipke saves more than 50, smuggling them out of the Riga Ghetto and into hiding (Zanis is seen above with Johanna Lipke, his wife and accomplice who fed the hidden Jews). Beginning in 1943, Robert and Johanna Seduls hide and support 11 Jews in Liepaja in a secret room in their building’s basement. More than 400 others in the country rescue Jews. Fewer than 200 Jews survive in hiding. A small number live through the ghetto, then Kaiserwald concentration camp, and as the Nazis prepare to leave Latvia, deportation to camps such as Stutthof and Buchenwald.
